December Writing Seminars: The Five Senses

The following seminars are offered during December winter break at Omega Teaching's writing studio located at 1030 Curtis St., #201, Menlo Park, CA 94025. They can be taken together or separately and in any order. Sign up for both classes for $90. Limit of 8 students per seminar. Please contact Jennifer at tsay_jennifer@yahoo.com or call 650. 324.1662 to enroll.

Symphony I: Apple of My Eye. 3 hours. $50. Grades 5 and up.

Inspired by A Whole New Mind: Why Right Brainers Will Rule the Future by Daniel Pink, this workshop combines both drawing and writing. Drawing is considered a "right brained" activity while writing is considered a "left brained" activity. Doing both activities results in "Symphony" -- the ability to connect different disciplines and link together the thinking of both brain hemispheres. Students will use their five senses to draw an apple. They will then write about the apple in several different styles. Students will also read and analyze pieces about the apple as both subject and metaphor. All materials included.

Symphony II: Food and Memoir. 3 hours. $50. Grades 5 and up.

This course continues the idea of Symphony by exploring how food and the five senses can inspire memoir. Proust knew this when he wrote about his beloved Madeleine biscuit; Ruth Reichl, the former NY Times restaurant reviewer and Gourmet food editor, continues the tradition with her essays that blend food memoir with cookbook recipes. Prior to the class students will choose a favorite food they have helped prepare and bring the recipe to class. Students will discuss why the recipe is their favorite and write a first person memoir introducing it. This is a terrific way for students to start gathering favorite family recipes and adding their own literary touches.
